Schedule Time to be Creative

Schedule Time to be Creative

As an entrepreneur, you need to bring a balanced leader to the game every day. To successfully do that requires a constant system check of your mind, body, and soul, and when you spend your days solving the most important problems to your organization, it takes making time for activities...

Are You in Retrograde?

Are You in Retrograde?

News Flash: Everything runs in a cycle. Your life, your business, the Sun and Moon, and Mercury. In case you didn’t know, Mercury entered retrograde in early April, which is a window of time blamed for hard decisions, bad circumstances, misbehaving electronics and funky moods. Here’s a gentle reminder -...

Are You Paying Attention? You Need to Understand What is Being Said.

I was recently online when a peer posted an intriguing question on Facebook. I could tell they were truly interested in what people would say, yet, I was extremely curious as to whether they could see beyond the responses into what it all meant. The question provided a choice that...

I Was That Boss Once: I Ran Staff Meetings Like a Boss

I Was That Boss Once: I Ran Staff Meetings Like a Boss

One day I was faced with an audience that didn’t know who I was and I was taught a harsh lesson - I had been running ineffective meetings for years. For years, I had observed my bosses and proudly followed the meeting practices that they delivered with each meeting. I...

Alaska Proposed Marriage and Virgin Should Have Said “No”

I'm torn. My 3rd favorite airline plans to marry my 2nd favorite airline... they have very different cultures, aircraft fleets, strategies, and different passengers. Alaska will gain an SFO base, a smaller LAX base, a whole different fleet of planes (increasing maintenance costs), new routes, new employees, and will be...

I Was That Boss Once: The Back Seat Driver

Everyone loves the back seat driver. You know the one, they claim they don’t want to drive, yet, as soon as you get in the car, they just can’t help themselves. It’s like you forgot how to drive and it can make the journey downright painful. Driving an organization is...

So, You Have a Business Idea. What Next?

Most common phrase I hear, "I have an idea and don't know where to start". First, you need to determine if you have an audience. Before you can entertain the idea of creating a business, you must do your research to find the size of your audience and calculate the...

The Key Question You Need To Answer When Pitching for Funding

Question: What exactly are you going to do with the money? When I was managing a firm in Milwaukee, as the Chief Operating Officer, I was approached by a small Venture Capital (VC) firm to attend a meeting to discuss their desire to fund another start-up. The VC wanted me...

I Was That Boss Once: Knew Exactly What I Wanted

In my twenties, I was ready to conquer the world and thought I knew everything that came my way. Growing up in the family business, I had watched and absorbed business operations and customer service for years. I had seen everything possible working with my Dad, or so my young...

How Cycling Improves My Balance

How Cycling Improves My Balance

For the past 2 years, in June, I spend 7-days riding my bicycle from San Francisco to Los Angeles. I know, why in the world would I do that? This is the point where most people get that crazy scrunched up face and a high-pitched voice says, “are you crazy?”. No,...

About Me

Learning about life and business comes through constantly challenging myself mentally and physically.

Growing up in Florida, I was always racing sailboats, which much like a business, a successful sailor is watching all variables, thinks on the spot, breeds good teamwork, and is a master communicator.

Later in life,  I set the goal to complete 5 Ironman competitions, Why did I choose to complete 5? You’ll have to ask me yourself.

Now I am addicted to my bicycle and completing the annual AIDS/Lifecycle ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles. 7-days of riding, totaling 545 miles and over 20,000 feet of climbing. There are lessons of trust, being in the moment, work-life balance, and excitement of being a part of a great community.
